SMITHERS SENIORS HOUSING
The Dik Tiy Housing Society in partnership with BC Housing are addressing the needs of seniors and adults with disabilities with the construction of a slab on grade, three-storey, 19-unit structure. The structure includes a common area for residents, office space, and common storage space for mobility devices. It is also built to Passive House standards and is certified by Passive House Canada.
Designed in a contemporary style that is befitting of the Town of Smithers’ ‘Alpine Theme’ locale, the building utilizes a simpler rectangular plan and dominant roof forms with large overhands. The building includes a simple palette of durable cementitious materials to manage the climate while also utilizing large tilt and turn windows. The project was designed to include parking for 10 cars, an outside picnic area and a detached garbage shed.
As part of the project, BC housing and the town of Smithers reached an agreement to include various off-site improvements to install 140ft of watermain, fire hydrants, a passenger drop off area, 280′ of concrete sidewalks, painted crosswalks and associated signage.
